Licensing & Certification
As of November 2007, thirty-seven states and the District of Columbia have passed regulations to license, certify or register massage and bodywork practitioners.
Connecticut's massage therapist licensure law went into effect on June 1, 1993. Among other requirements, the State of Connecticut mandates that an applicant for massage therapy licensure pass the National Certification Examination in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. Current information about the State of Connecticut's massage therapist licensure requirements and procedures may be obtained from:

Check with local governments in advance of your enrollment at CCMT if you have specific questions about the area in which you hope to work. Information regarding state regulations nationwide is available at www.amtamassage.org.
Local massage ordinances or business and zoning laws may exist even in states with massage licensure such as Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, etc. Local ordinance information can usually be obtained from the office of a City or Town Clerk. CCMT encourages all applicants to research state and local regulations that may apply in the geographic locale where they intend to establish their massage therapy practice.
